TillaPallo

We recommend to order our items together with a heatpack. It keeps the plant protected from frost while shipping!

TillaPallo air plant terrariums contain exciting air plants and hand-picked decoration materials from the Finnish and Scandinavian nature. Our glass orbs are designed by us and blown locally at Lasi-Kostamo, a traditional glass blower family's manufacture. TillaPallo comes from Turku, Finland, where Elias Tillandz, the godfather of air plants was a professor at the academy.

We would like to offer a unique home decoration ornament which fits well with contemporary design, while being a curiosity for plant-lovers.

'tillapallo' is a tribute to air plants and also to Finnish language: Tilla comes from Tillandsia, the latin name of air plants, and pallo means orb in Finnish.
Yritys
Kuka tai ketkä ova kaupan takana ja mistä idea siihen lähti?
We are Eszter and Patrik originally from Hungary, now living in Turku, Finland Together we started TillaPallo in late 2015. Patrik is also working as a biologist.
The idea of TillaPallo - or something similar which is TillaPallo these days - came during a trip in California several years ago.
We both love design items and organic materials conceptualized as interior decoration. We wanted to offer something unique and new, a home decoration ornament which can fit well into contemporary Nordic design and needs, while being a curiosity for plant lovers.
Mitkä ovat olleet toimintanne kohokohtia?
To our knowledge, TillaPallo is the only air plant terrarium company using handblown Finnish glass and hand-picked decoration materials from the Finnish nature.
Millä tavalla pyritte parantamaan ympäristön ja ihmisten hyvinvointia?
We prefer quality, locally sourced ingredients and local workforce. We are working together with Lasi-Kostamo, a traditional glassblower family from Turku/Kaarina, therefore our glass orbs are designed and blown locally.
We established a micro-green house to propagate our own air plants however it is a slow process. These air plants are native to South-America but to avoid long shipping procedure, we order them from The Netherlands when we are out of stock.
We also offer personal pick-up for customers in Turku to reduce carbon footprint.
Most of our packaging materials are ordered from Finnish companies and they are recyclable or already recycled. A part of the product packaging is handmade.
Onko teidän pitänyt luopua jostakin kestävämmän ja vastuullisemman toimintatavan vuoksi?
Yes, indeed. Back to 2015, when we started the business - more like as a beta version - we were not able to use Finnish glass, so we ordered them from somewhere else. Quality means higher purchase price, so after we started to use the local glass, we had to lower our profit and raise our prices when we started to use the quality Finnish glass. However we believe it was one of the best choices we made since we are running the business. Moreover, it gives us one more possibility to be completely unique: the fact that the glass is handmade, and all plants and hand-picked decorations are natural elements, ensures that there are no two exactly same products.
Moreover, preferring the locally made and eco-friendly packaging materials is an other important aspect regarding sustainability.
Mikä on yrityksenne tulevaisuuden visio?
We would like to make homes more green, even if it is a small plant-based decoration. We have a lot of new ideas and designs in the pipeline focusing on recycled materials. Hopefully you can see those as products soon!
Mikä on mottonne?
We do not really have a motto...
Mikä inspiroi teitä?
We have a deep interest into design, plants, and nature in general, and we like to work with organic materials. We also love the Nordic minimalism.
Tuotteet ja tuotanto
Mikä tuote kuvaa teitä parhaiten ja miksi?
Oh, my, it is hard to tell...
We both have our favourite air plant species (Eszter: Tillandsia funckiana, Patrik: Tillandsia pruinosa) and we love every kind of shape of our glass orbs. It is impermanent which product we like the most at the moment. It depends from the season, the weather, or even from our daily mood.
Also, we love taking photos about our creations and then zoom on the pictures to see every little detail of it... Maybe we like mostly the DIY-kit terrariums, where the products are packed individually. Customers can arrange then the terrarium as they wish, or according to the product picture.
Mikä erottaa tuotteenne tavanomaisesta markettituotteesta?
A TillaPallo is like a new hobby at home, even together, with the family. It is fun to get to know and learn more how these cute plants work. We believe they bring joy to people's life.
We give the choice for the customers to pick a handmade air plant terrarium made mostly from local ingredients. With that, the customer is also able to support local, eco-friendly and small companies.
Moreover, we also always include an overview about the plant species - no matter if it is a rare or well-known one - so the customer can learn more about the genus of Tillandsia.
Millainen on ollut paras saamanne palaute tuotteistanne?
We receive the best feedbacks on local markets. When we meet people face to face, we are able to introduce ourselfs and TillaPallo in an offline situation, where we get to know the first impressions about our products.
Mikä toisen valmistajan tuote on mielestänne lyömätön yliveto omien tuotteidenne lisäksi?
We don't have our favourite ones but we always see tons of amazing products on Finnish design markets. It is very inspiring to see when clearness, cleverness, quality, talent and fun meet in these products.
Mitkä seikat tekevät tuotteistanne ympäristöystävällisen?
We offer personal pick-up for customers in Turku to avoid unnecessary waste gas.
Most of our packaging materials are ordered from Finnish companies and they are recyclable or already recycled. A part of the product packaging is handmade.
The air plants are native to South-America but to avoid long shipping procedure, we order them from the Netherlands when we are out of stock.
When the weather is nice, we don't hesitate to jump on the bike and to go to the post with the new orders on two wheels.
